Threshold Finance Terms
Threshold finance encompasses a decentralized, permissionless system designed to bridge the gap between Bitcoin and Ethereum, enabling functionalities like Bitcoin staking and access to DeFi opportunities for Bitcoin holders. Understanding the specific terms used within the Threshold Network is crucial for navigating its complexities.
tBTC (Threshold Bitcoin): This is the primary token representing Bitcoin on the Ethereum blockchain within the Threshold Network. tBTC is an ERC-20 token, meaning it conforms to the Ethereum token standard, allowing it to be used within the Ethereum DeFi ecosystem. One tBTC is designed to be backed 1:1 by Bitcoin locked in a secure vault.
Keep Network: Preceding Threshold, Keep Network was a key component. It provided the infrastructure for securely storing and managing the private keys needed to custody Bitcoin within the Threshold system. It used a network of validators who staked KEEP tokens to provide collateral and security for the key management process.
NuCypher: NuCypher was another prior decentralized privacy layer. It specialized in key management, specifically proxy re-encryption, allowing encrypted data to be shared securely without revealing the underlying encryption keys. Like Keep, NuCypher merged with Keep Network to form Threshold Network.
T Token: The T token is the native governance and staking token of the Threshold Network. It emerged from the merger of KEEP and NU tokens. Holders of KEEP and NU tokens exchanged them for T tokens in a token merge process.
Threshold DAO (Decentralized Autonomous Organization): The Threshold DAO governs the Threshold Network. T token holders can participate in governance by proposing and voting on changes to the network, including protocol upgrades, treasury management, and parameter adjustments. The DAO ensures decentralized decision-making and community control.
Signers: These are nodes within the Threshold Network responsible for managing the Bitcoin vaults. They use multi-party computation (MPC) and threshold signatures to collectively control the keys to the vaults without any single signer having access to the entire private key. This distributed key management approach enhances security and prevents single points of failure.
Vaults: These are the Bitcoin addresses controlled by the signers within the Threshold Network. When users deposit Bitcoin to mint tBTC, the Bitcoin is deposited into these vaults. The security and integrity of these vaults are paramount to maintaining the peg between tBTC and Bitcoin.
Threshold ECDSA (Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm): This is a cryptographic primitive used by signers to collectively sign Bitcoin transactions without revealing their individual private key shares. It’s a critical component for securely moving Bitcoin out of the vaults when tBTC is redeemed for Bitcoin.
Minting: The process of creating new tBTC by depositing Bitcoin into the vaults. Users send Bitcoin to the vault addresses and receive an equivalent amount of tBTC on the Ethereum blockchain.
Redemption: The process of converting tBTC back into Bitcoin. Users burn their tBTC and request a withdrawal of Bitcoin from the vaults. The signers collectively sign the Bitcoin transaction to release the Bitcoin to the user’s provided Bitcoin address.
Staking: T token holders can stake their tokens to help secure the Threshold Network and participate in governance. Staking T tokens may involve certain rewards, contributing to the overall health and stability of the network.
Understanding these terms provides a solid foundation for comprehending the Threshold Network’s architecture, functionality, and governance, allowing for informed participation in this burgeoning decentralized finance ecosystem.
